Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Regular Press Conference on September 10, 2012

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei held a press conference on September 10, 2012.

Q: It is reported that during Indian Foreign Minister Krishna's visit to Pakistan, the two sides signed several cooperation agreements. What is China's comment?

A: We noted and welcomed the positive outcome of India-Pakistan Foreign Ministers' meeting. India and Pakistan are major countries in South Asia. The improvement of India-Pakistan relations is vital to regional peace, stability and development. As a neighbour and friend of both India and Pakistan, China will continue to support their appropriate settlement of disputes through dialogue and cooperation for common development.

Q: The Japanese Cabinet will discuss the "purchase" plan of the Diaoyu Islands today. What is China's comment?

A: The Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands have been an inherent part of Chinese territory since ancient times. China has ample historical and jurisprudential evidence for that. Any unilateral move made by the Japanese side with regard to the Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands is illegal and invalid, to which China is firmly opposed. The Chinese government is resolute and determined in safeguarding the territorial sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands. China is following closely the developments and will take necessary measures to defend national territorial sovereignty.

Q: The Pakistani Prime Minister will attend the Summer Davos Forum. Please brief us on his upcoming meeting with Chinese leaders.

A: Prime Minister Ashraf will attend the Summer Davos Forum. During his stay in Tianjin, Chinese and Pakistani leaders will exchange views on bilateral relations, which is of great significance to deepening traditional friendship and pushing forward mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Pakistan. We will release information about the meeting in due course.
