China, and the world at large, was shocked by the devastating earthquake that hit Wenchuan on May 12, 2008. Under the command of governments at various levels, people in the disaster-stricken areas started a race against time to save the people buried under debris. PLA men, armed police, fire officers and professional rescue personnel, and medical workers, and more than 1 million volunteers from all parts of the country rushed to the stricken areas for disaster relief, and people in the disaster-stricken areas also struggled to organize their own rescue. A total of 83,988 people were saved from debris, more than 4 million sick and wounded people received medical treatment, and emergency arrangements were made for over 15 million people. Governments and people around the world lent a helping hand to the people in the disaster-stricken areas, and batches of emergency relief supplies and donations were sent to the disaster-stricken areas in Sichuan. Rescue workers, medical teams and volunteers, with different skin colors and speaking different languages, worked with might and main to save lives and soothe the soul.
